The coin cabinet at the Bode Museum holds more than 540,000 objects, but German media report only the "big maple leaf" was stolen. The Canadian coin, nicknamed the "big maple leaf", has a face value of $1m - but because it is 100kg (220lb) of pure 24-carat gold, its value is much higher at today's price for gold bullion. It is not clear how the thieves evaded the alarm system or carried the heavy, half-metre (20.9 in) coin away. It was taken during the night from the Bode Museum in Berlin.
As it stated in Berlin police say thieves broke into the German capital's Bode Museum and made off with a massive 100-kilogram (221-pound) gold coin worth millions. The museum says the coin is in the Guinness Book of Records for its purity of 999.99/1000 gold. The three-centimeter (1.18-inch) thick coin, with a diameter of 53 centimeters (20.9 inches), has a face value of $1 million. By weight alone, however, it would be worth almost $4.5 million at market prices. It has a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and maple leaves on the other.
